Chinese Mayor Tours
Fairfield County
Mayor Zhao Zhicheng of
Jingshan County in Hubei Province, China, accompanied Diamond Power’s
Chinese subsidiary executives on a visit to Ohio this past week.
Particularly interested in agriculture and food processing, Mayor Zhao
met with State officials on Monday and toured crop, dairy and cattle
farms as well as Ralston Foods in Fairfield County on Tuesday. Tuesday
evening was marked by dinner at the Lancaster Country Club, attended by
Lancaster Mayor Art Wallace. Commissioner Jon Myers also greeted Mayor
Zhao that evening. Hubei Province has a sister-state relationship with
Ohio. Started in 1903 and employing over 400 people in Fairfield
County, Diamond Power is a leader in boiler cleaning and sootblower

Fairfield County
Has Second Fastest Growing Hispanic Population in Ohio
As reported today in
the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette article “Small-town charm draws
Hispanics”, Fairfield County has experienced a 22.9% increase in its
Hispanic population in the last two years, from 991 in 2001 to 1218 in
2002, just behind Union County’s 24.5% rate. Why? Lancaster Resident
Sephora Escarpeta, a Dominican Republic native and Spanish teacher at
Lancaster High School, said in the article, "I was looking to move from
New York to anywhere.” Three visits was all it took for Escarpeta to
move. Lancaster reminded Hispanics in the article of their birth
countries. They could see the stars at night rather than tall buildings.
"I kept thinking I could breathe. I could see the sky. I could
breathe," Escarpeta said.
