Hometown Heroes Mural

The July Map of the Month is a detailed “tour” of Fairfield County’s Hometown Heroes Mural, found on the side of the Amstutz Building—former home of Veteran Services—at 227 E. Main Street in Lancaster. Grown from respect for our Veterans and those who have fallen in combat, especially those from Fairfield County, the mural is painted in a style reminiscent of the antique advertisements once found on buildings throughout the county, carrying patriotic elements and local references throughout. The project turned an empty wall into a public canvas, promoting local talent and engaging the community in support of gratitude for the military. It inspired intergovernmental cooperation and helped shape public policy on zoning variances that permit placemaking murals within the historic district. Especially meaningful during the isolation of the pandemic, the mural received a National Association of Counties Achievement Award in 2021.

How We Got Here

Fairfield County, Ohio, traces its origins to early American colonial history, beginning with Jamestown in 1607 and the establishment of the Thirteen Colonies. After the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Ohio became part of the Northwest Territory, eventually achieving statehood in 1803. Fairfield County was proclaimed in 1800, known for its fertile farmland and agricultural prominence, and assumed its current boundaries in 1818. The city of Lancaster, founded by Colonel Ebenezer Zane in 1800, became the county seat and developed as a key regional center, with a population of over 40,000 as of 2020. The document highlights the county's evolution from colonial roots to a thriving agricultural and industrial community.
